The private sector organizations keen to take on the redevelopment of the long-stalled Saglemi Housing Project are about to submit proposals to the Ministry of Works and Housing.
This important stage marks the beginning of a new chapter in the endeavor to finish this major housing development, as the deadline for submitting ideas draws near.
After careful site investigations, ten possible developers expressed interest. The Ministry is anticipating these firms’ official bid submissions.
On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Minister of Works and Housing Kojo Oppong Nkrumah gave a status report on the Request for Proposals (RFP) earlier this year in an address to the media in Accra.
Aiming to provide 5,000 affordable housing units, the Saglemi Housing Project was eventually reduced to 1,506 apartments before being put on hold because of legal concerns.
Efforts to finish the project have been made more difficult by theft and destruction of the partially constructed structures.
But the current administration is committed to seeing it through, drawing on the resources and experience of the private sector.
“We anticipate formally receiving all of the proposals by the 8th, or on the 8th of July, in accordance with the work plan that we have put together.
“We will do it openly and we will hand over the bids to an independent evaluation entity for an evaluation report and based on that, government will proceed to select one of the bidders,” he said.
He clarified that this strategy seeks to solve Ghana’s persistent problem of unfinished public housing projects by guaranteeing that the most qualified developer is selected on the basis of qualifications and merit.
The Ministry’s receipt and delivery of the bids for assessment throughout the upcoming weeks will be significant.
The selected developer will revitalize the Saglemi project and provide Ghanaians with much-needed housing at last.
