The Minority faction in Parliament has been accused by the Majority caucus of trying to impede Ghana’s economic progress by continuously opposing certain tax waivers that the House is presently debating.
“The main objective of the minority NDC in Parliament, led by Dr. Ato Forson, is to obstruct government business and prevent the Ghanaian people from experiencing the necessary economic growth that comes from businesses investing in the nation and growing their enterprises,” Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated.
A political impasse has resulted in tax waiver petitions worth up to $400 million languishing in the Finance Committee for more than three years.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), meanwhile, has pledged to thwart these requests at every opportunity.
On Thursday, May 30, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin told reporters in Parliament that the NDC was acting in a hypocritical manner.
He said that during the administration of former President John Mahama, the NDC had given MPs tax breaks totaling more than $800 million.
However, we are aware that in 2016, the NDC, led by President John Mahama, gave Meridian Port Services a $832 million tax waiver, making it the most extravagant tax giveaway in Ghanaian history. For the port project, the NDC administration had filed at the time for a $982 million tax rebate, he claimed.
“And thanks to the minority’s diligence back then, we were able to shut it down up to $832 million, save the Ghanaian government and people about $100 million, and even request that more work be done,” he continued.
