Leader of the National Hawkers and Informal Vendors Association Madam Juliana Brown Afari has revealed that the market areas, especially in the capital city, have not received enough education on the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
She told Alfred Ocansey, the host of the Sunrise morning show on 3FM Friday, May 15 that the only platforms the market women seemed to be getting some form of education from are the televisions and radio stations.
This, she said, is a problem for them because the education done on radio and television are broadcast in English, a situation that is cutting them off due to the limitations they have when it comes to the English language.
Ms Brown Afari noted that due to the deadly effect of the coronavirus on the health of the people and the economy in Ghana, the government will have to prioritize the informal sector with the education because the informal sector constitute about 85 per cent of the working population in Ghana.
“A lot of our members don’t know and understand Covid-19 because there hasn’t been any proper education on it for us,” she said.
“I want to appeal to authorities that sector that is the 85 per cent of this economy needs care. We are the breadwinners, so we need attention and more education on coronavirus.”
She suggested that information vans should be placed at all the market centres to drum home the message to traders.
