3 Covid-19 patients under intensive care at UGMC

Three patients with Covid-19 are in intensive care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), hospital authorities say. The three are persons who require support of ventilators and are being treated under the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.

Chief Executive (CEO) of UGMC Darius Osei, who disclosed this to journalists on Thursday said, eight other patients are being held at the centre.

Dr Osei says 3 patients are under intensive care at UGMC

The eight, he said, do not require intensive care and are being treated at the regular wards designated for Covid-19 at the UGMC.

He said 18 persons have already been treated for the disease and have been discharged from the facility. Dr. Osei stressed the facility has the capacity to manage patients while health workers remain committed to help combat the disease.

He lauded the commitment of health workers at the UGMC and other facilities across the country for their contribution.

“This has been the most difficult time for health workers but they have really done well,” he said.

He added: “in the beginning people were skeptical but we encouraged ourselves.”

Dr. Osei also appealed to the public to stop stigmatising persons with the disease.

He said health authorities “have tried to demystify the myth that comes around it.”

Ghana’s situation on Thursday

As of Thursday afternoon, the Ghana Health Service reported 1,154 cases of the pandemic across ten regions in Ghana.

The epicentre of the novel coronavirus in the country remains the capital Accra with over 800 cases.

The GHS has also confirmed 120 recoveries while the fatalities remain nine.

Schools and other places of public gathering, meanwhile, remain closed on presidential orders.

A three-week lockdown of Accra and other parts of the country was, however, lifted on Sunday which triggered a slow return to normalcy in the country.
