A decision made today by the Minority may force Parliament to convene with just half of the House present.
The NDC lawmakers are adamant that they will not appear in the house whenever the Majority Leader needs to appear in court as the parliament prepares to reconvene at 1 pm.
“The NDC Minority Caucus will only be available for the business of Parliament after proceedings of the court have ended on the days scheduled for the hearing of the ongoing ambulance case trial,” the party stated in a statement.
The Attorney General is suing Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson in court for allegedly engaging in improper financial behavior when purchasing certain ambulances.
The two parties in Parliament are now divided on this case, which has generated a great deal of controversy.
The Majority Caucus filed a petition with the Speaker on May 3, 2024, requesting an immediate meeting of the House to discuss important matters related to government business, such as the 34th Report of the Appointments Committee approval and a resolution on increased financing.
In response, Members of Parliament were called back from recess to resume work today, according to a letter from the Office of the Speaker.
However, there is a conflict between the day of the House resumption and another court day.
Since Dr. Ato Forson is in court for the hearing, the caucus is currently operating without a leader.
The trial judge’s apparent intention to prevent the MP from participating in official government activities worries the NDC caucus.
The Minority says they won’t enter the chamber until the Minority Leader returns as a result of this.
Minority Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza claims that as a sign of their solidarity, the action will go on every day the MP appears in court.
“… the NDC Minority will continue to solidarise and stand by its Leader anytime he is due to appear in court.”
