The Supreme Court has adjourned the ruling of the case between the Electoral Commission and the National Democratic Congress to Tuesday, 23rd June, 2020.
At the hearing today, June 11, the NDC defended its position of using the old Voters Identification Card as the required ID for the compilation of the new register.
The NDC argued that compiling a new voter’s register with only the Ghana Card and Ghanaian passport as proof of identification will deprive many Ghanaians the right to vote in the polls, a claim the EC disagrees with, explaining that the current voters’ ID card is a fruit of a poisonous tree.
The NDC is also praying the court to clarify the mandate of the EC to compile a new register.
The party in its suit said the EC lacks the power to go ahead with its plans because it can only “compile a register of voters only once, and thereafter revise it periodically, as may be determined by law”.
The court was however unhappy with the NDC making EC second respondent and the Attorney General first respondent in the case.
