The body of nine-year-old Abdul Shakur who was carried away by floodwaters at Madina on Sunday is reported to have been found.
According to GhanaWeb sources at the Regional Office of the National Disaster Management Authority, the body of the deceased boy was identified by his family at the Police Hospital mortuary on Wednesday morning when the family resorted to checking unidentified bodies after three days of fruitless search for their son.
The family, when contacted by GhanaWeb, said they were yet to be briefed by the police on how and when the body of Abdul Shakur was found.
They expressed hope that the body of their son will be released to them as soon as all legal processes are completed so he can be buried according to Islamic customs.
On Sunday May 13, 2020, Abdul Shakur who was sent by his mother to deliver ‘koose’ to his aunt after it had rained was suspected to have been carried away by rushing waters, according to his aunt who spoke to GhanaWeb on Tuesday.
Laila said that, while cleaning the surrounding of her shop after the rain on Sunday, she saw a towel laid on top of a small bridge in front of the entrance to her compound with a polythene bag containing ‘koose’ and one of the pair of a sandal which turned out to be that of Shakur lying on top of it.
Suspecting something was not right, Laila says she immediately called Shakur’s mother who confirmed that she had sent him to deliver ‘koose’ to her earlier.
The family say their immediate suspicion following the Sunday incident has been that, young Shakur may have lost one of his sandals to the water flowing through the drain in front of his aunt’s house and in his quest to retrieve the sandals may have been dragged into an adjoining bigger drain a few meters away.
